Sleeping Giant and the Bugs
Day 3 at Sleeping Giant PP. Weather is beautiful as it was yesterday. Skipped some journal days. Didn’t feel like writing.
Am puttering around, moving slowly, not doing too much. I’m staying in the “300’s” which are a group of sites on the other side of the lake from the main campground. I stayed here last year after reading something saying they were quiet and private. I was only able to grab a couple nights last year as they are in high demand. The site I had last year was a “walk-in” site meaning you park your car then follow a short trail into the site. The downside is you have to lug all your gear in, the upside is it feels like a backcountry site. I scouted all the sites when they were vacant before I left and so knew to reserve 311 for this summer.
The path to 311 is the longest - I think about 75 metres but it has better water access than the two other walk-in sites. Happy to have my wagon! The biggest reason that I chose the sites over here is because I cheat and can leave Jubs unleashed. You can’t see your neighbours at all, being completely surrounded by woods. So she finally has freedom.
Speaking of those neighbours, the one to the left of me got in late the same day I did and decided to party loudly and stupidly until 1:30. They were so rediculous that they’d let out blood curdling screams. There are kids in this groups of sites, the families must have been horrified. Now my neighbours to the right of me got in yesterday and decided to do the same thing except they were up until 3am. While you can’t see anybody you can certainly hear everything. I could hear every beer can they opened, chugged, then crushed. I think they were also hacking the trees. Let’s hope, now that everyone’s settled in, that tonight is quieter. I must say, I am retaliating by playing reggae quite loudly starting at 7:30am.
The night in the hotel was nice but I didn’t sleep well for some reason. I was so happy to have a shower that it was the first thing I did the second I closed the hotel room door behind me. By the time I got out, Jubs was fast asleep on the bed. The only time she got up was to do a couple errands and for a before bed pee. Otherwise she was sleeping peacefully. She would have been happy to stay all day.
The drive here was uneventful, it’s only an hour from Thunder Bay. Lost cell signal after Pass Lake and then remembered that I hadn’t downloaded any new podcasts. I’m going to have to ration them. The day after tomorrow I had to do one more board call so when I drive back up to Pass Lake, I’ll download a couple more to get me through that evening. See
Did a load of laundry in the park machines yesterday and also drove to Silver Islet, a cottage community at the end of the peninsula. There’s a general store there for tourists that’s super cute. I wanted to buy a T-shirt last year but didn’t for some reason so made sure to get one this year. I was talking to the guy that runs it (owns it?) whi also originally from Toronto but had taken a road trip in his twenties and fell in love with the North, found Silver Islet and has been living there for 20 years. Silver Islet was once a teeny silver mining community in the 1800s and many of the old log cabins still exist that people have turned into cottages. There’s a lot that reminds me of Chester for some reason.
I had cooked up some chicken breast yesterday that I’d picked up the day before. I cheated and bought a little cheapo cooler in Marathon at Canadian Tire. It does the job for about 24 hours so I cooked up all the chicken figuring it was safer to keep it cool cooked rather than risk loosing cool raw. I had a chicken caesar salad for dinner last night and will have fajitas today for dinner.
I read on a backpacking blog to buy freeze dried yogurt (meant for babies) and rehydrate it with granola which is what I did for lunch. Yum. Worked well. Am definitely eating better this round.
I seem to have lost the plunger to my aeropress. I searched the car and my kitchen box but I can’t find it anywhere. So now I’m just having drip coffee which is fine too. Honestly I can’t tell the difference.
Mozzies are bad but my thermacell is doing its job and so is the deet. Will go for a swim this afternoon.
Jubs is living her best life with all the swimmies and ball!
