Turning Around

Up at the crack of dawn, as usual. Not a lick of wind, the lake was glass. What a contrast! After about half an hour I realized I was getting hints of smoke in the air. I checked the forecast and while not as bad as before, there was going to be smoke today.

Made some toast and coffee and sat on my coffee rock while Jubs dug her nose in stuff and puttered around in the water. Sat and thought about the upcoming day and was looking forward to a proper bed tonight. Planned out how I was going to pack up efficiently while avoiding hauling my canoe up the short but steep and treacherous hill from the shore to the car. Decided I’d pack up the car and then drive it to the public beach and then walk back and do my last paddle to the car. Smart, smart, smart.

Followed through with the plan and all was seamless. Paddled over to the dog beach first so Jubs could burn off a bit of steam before the not so long ride back to T-Bay. Then paddled to the public beach and put the canoe on top of the car while fighting for my life with the various flies. Then hit the road.

Was feeling happy about turning back to face the direction of home. I like exploring but am always happy (usually) to start the journey home. Made plans to meet up with a friend who will be in the exact same area as I will be next week so that will be nice and then sorted out plans with my friend who I spend a week with every summer at her cabin which is where I’ll wind up the trip before going home home.

Feeling buoyed, I watched the ribbon of concrete in front of me. I’m finding hard to articulate how amazing I find it that out here, you don’t have to travel far out of a populated area to be in the wilderness. Living in Toronto you really have to go far and work hard for it. The only thing around was trees and road, and very rarely a turn off to a gravel road to somewhere? nowhere?

Within about an hour and a half was hitting the farm land outside of T-Bay and the shortly after that, town. Checked into the hotel and while I immediately got into the shower, Jubs passed out on the bed. I’m now lying next to her watching TV - at almost 10pm and full sunlight.

So happy to have a real bed, real shower and break from the biters. This will be my last post while because I remember last year that there is zero cell service at Sleeping Giant. Family-you can get me in an emergency on my Garmin.
