Summer Prep

Juno in the canoe - Lake Superior - 2024

Last summer, I spent almost six weeks living out of my car while exploring northern Ontario. I’d never really been north of Temagami previously and so was setting out to discover my own backyard. Did I ever fall in love! I spent most of my time puttering along the northern shore of Lake Superior which is stunning. This summer I’ve decided to make a similar trip as I want to return to a few favourite spots and check out spots I missed. I discovered that living out of my car for six weeks was too challenging so this time I’ll be gone for four weeks with longer/fewer stops. I’ll be doing a combination of front country and back country camping - both of which I like for different reasons.

I leave shortly so am in the middle of organizing my gear which has exploded on my living room floor in my tiny apartment. I made some learnings last year so am trying a bunch of new things this year.

  1. I need to lighten up my gear. I’m getting old and portages are getting tough.

  2. Leave at home anything I didn’t use last year. I have a small car and a big dog. Be efficient.

  3. Make some key gear changes so that I’m happier, more comfortable, sleep better. I don’t need much and am very low key about what I need to be happy.

  4. Pack the car differently. Juno takes up the whole backseat so efficiency is key.

  5. Eat better. I struggled with food last time around - not having access to a fridge sucked and coolers just don’t cut it. It didn’t occur to me how awful a lack of fresh fruit and veg would be.
